Adorable Pooches Steal Spotlight from Hosts Bernadette Peters and Andrew Rannells at Broadway Barks

“He kind of makes me want to sing to him – look at that fabulous face of yours!” Bernadette Peters said of the shaggy haired-terrier mix that played Sandy in the 2014 Broadway revival of “Annie.”

The pooch and the legendary Broadway Diva shared the stage Saturday afternoon at Broadway Barks, the star-studded dog and cat adoption event, which is free and open to the public. (Located at Shubert Alley, between 44th and 45th Streets, between Broadway and Eighth Avenues.)

Peters, who looked great in a tank top and jeans, peered into the pooches’ eyes and crooned the lyrics from, “(Have I Stayed) Too Long at the Fair/Look at That Face.” The doggy looked as enthralled as the audience, although that may have been because of all the treats Peters kept sneaking the four-legged actor.

Peters sang, “Look at that face just look at it! Look at that fabulous face of yours, I knew first look I took at it, this was the face that the world adores.”

“Thanks for making my dreams come true,” Peters told the doggy as he ambled off stage left.

From the oohs and aahs directed at the gorgeous animals by the crowds of people circling the stage, everyone felt the same way about the many beautiful dogs of all ages and breeds up for adoption from New York City animal shelters and agencies.

Founded by Peters and Mary Tyler Moore 17 years ago, Broadway Barks features stars from all the hottest shows on Broadway who talk up the dogs and introduce them from the stage in hopes people in the audience will take them home.

This year, Andrew Rannells (“The Book of Mormon,” “Girls”) co-hosted the annual event with Peters.

“Can I put this on my resume as doing a show with you?” asked Rannells.

“Sure,” Peters replied.

“I’ve always wanted to do a show with her!” Rannells enthused.

Actors from a dozen or so shows on the Great White Way participated, including cast members from “Mamma Mia!” “Fish in the Dark,” “On the Town,” “It Shoulda Been You,” “Fun Home,” “The Book of Mormon,” “An American in Paris” and “Something Rotten.”

We spotted a dozen or so Tony nominees, including Tony winner Christian Borle from “Something Rotten.” “He won the Tony,” Peters called out as Borle left the stage.

The real stars of the event of course are the gorgeous animals, many of them who were adopted and went home to new owners that day.

While she was on the stage, Lena Hall from “Hedwig” held up a diminutive Pomeranian that looked comfortable in her arms. She couldn’t resist and ended up adopting the fur-ball. Later Hall sent an instagram and photo of the dog, Ziggy Starfox, and announced the new “addition to her family.”

Some of the hard luck stories of the dogs were very sad, but there was plenty of laughter, too. Everyone laughed as Jessica Keenan Wynn, who appears in “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” sang a song from the show to a bulldog in a derby hat named Romeo.

Jackie Hoffman, who appears in “On the Town,” came on stage with two gorgeous spaniels. She read from a card of the black and white dog next to her, “Molly is a feisty little girl who loves exploring new things.” Added Hoffman, “And Molly told me ‘On the Town’ should have won best revival so we love Molly.”

Of the other dog on the stage up for adoption, Hoffman cracked, “This is Betty, beautiful, black Betty. She’s Jewish but she doesn’t mind anyone who converts. She’s gorgeous and sweet.” Added Hoffman, “She loves to crawl up into your lap for hugs and kisses.”

Hoffman added, “If you know an evil bitch like me can turn around for these dogs, this is something you want to bring into your life, right?”
